Front Cover Planning

Magazine Analysing

Before putting together my front cover I  had analysed three different music magazine, Rock, Indie and Pop genres and have done a fourth analysation for my chosen genre, which is rock. I have done two for rock because I wanted to see if there was any difference in common conventions throughout the covers. Each magazine has branding, several side stories in which link to the main story (which the reader is most interested in), a photo of a celebrity who is included in the main story. All have eye catching left thirds, drawing the buyer in to purchase the magazine. One thing I have noticed after analysing different magazine covers were the different image to text ratios. Both rock and pop magazines have a lot going on and contain very loud images compared to the indie magazne, which is much more calm.

Magazine Layout

On the right of the magazines i've created layout sheets which include where the Masthead, Strapline, Side Stories, Give aways, Main Story, Main Image, Left Third and Barcode are.

My Magazine

The photo to the left is the original image that I had taken. This will go as my front cover as the red background contrasts well with the clothes the models are wearing. My plan was to find a plain background so it could work as a canvas, this is more editorial. I will keep the red background. I feel like this will be a good front cover image, as the first photo the audience sees, it shows off the band and an instrument.

After constructing this image as my front cover, I realised it would fit the indie genre more than rock.
Therefore I started again.

This picture has good potential as my front cover. I stuck to using a plain background, although it is white it would be edited in Photoshop to a darker photo, making the photo a lot darker. The masthead could fit in the left corner or across the top nicely. The reason the model is topless is because I plan to edit tattoos using Photoshop. This will expand my knowledge using different programs.

Below are some of the other Photographs I took.

The photograph showing John jumping in the air took multiple shots, it was really hard to get the perfect picture. Even though this couldn't be used as a front cover as it doesn't follow common conventions, it still shows a very strong character; due to the camera angle. John is higher than the camera therefore making it an high angle shot. This shows John has power over the reader.

These photo's link with my target audience as it is meant for young adults. The women could see any of these photographs and be attracted to the model, men could see the photograph and aspire to be like the model.

My target audience is between the ages of 13-18. Having a male model attracts more women as rock is normally male based.
